Humidors – the near perfect environment for your cigars.

Humidors for your cigars are basically boxes designed to keep an environment of consistent humidity. Typically, these are made with various types of wood, mainly Honduran Mahogany, American Red Cedar, and the most popular and recommended, Spanish Cedar. The thing about Spanish Cedar though is that does not come from Spain. It derives from Central America and Brazil. Part of the appeal and practical functionality is that it said to repel tobacco beetles and that it keeps humidity better than other woods.

The outer shell of the cigar box is constructed of solid wood with a veneer, while the interior is lined with the Spanish Cedar.

The humidor’s main job is to ensure a proper environment for the cigar. When stored, you want the cigar to keep from drying out. When that happens, the wrapper can crack and flake apart. If it gets too damp, it won’t burn evenly. The optimal range would be 68% to 74%.

Because these are special containers to preserve your cigars, there are definitely some things to know and look for when buying your humidor. Then once you take it home, it’s not just a matter of throwing in your cigars right away. You have to run a process of setting up, or seasoning the humidor.

Tools For The Humidor

Aiding in keeping a proper humidified environment for the cigars is a humidifier device. This can be the popular Credo brand which is a small circular device, or other more rectangular ones. They contain a mix of distilled water and Propylene Glycol which is an agent to keep a balance in the humidity.

Another important tool to have is the hygrometer. This gauge, which also attaches in the inside, measures the relative humidity and helps you keep track of that level.  These can look like a circular gauge, or can also come in a digital version. This is important to have in any cases from the small “cigar box”, to the large cabinet humidors.

You can even construct your own humidor. Many people handy with tools make their own and there’s not really that much to it. Some are every bit high quality, professional, and elegant looking humidors like you’d see at the stores on online.
